Basic Function 

We are seeking a motivated student for a summer internship in our vivarium, specializing in animal husbandry. This position is ideal for students pursuing degrees in veterinary technology, animal science, biology, or a related field, and/or those who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in a professional research setting. The intern will work under the guidance of experienced technicians and supervisors to support the daily operations of the vivarium. 

 

Staff members are expected to conduct work in their areas of training and experience under direction from supervisors or by following established protocolsTasks at the intern level may vary widely. 

Essential Functions 

  • Assist with the daily care and monitoring of various laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, and habitat cleaning. 
  • Assist with observation of animal behavior and health, reporting any concerns to the supervisory staff. 
  • Assist with the maintenance of animal housing and support areas to ensure a clean, safe, and organized environment. 
  • Help record detailed and accurate records and environmental data. 
  • Support the vivarium staff in preparing animals and facilities for research procedures. 
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on improving animal welfare and operational efficiencies.

Success Factors 

  • Ability to follow SOPs, conduct work with general supervision and provide accurate and complete documentation 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by specific assignments.  
  • Ability to work varied work hours, but typically include weekdays with occasional weekend hours. 
  • Prepared to work in an environment that requires wearing personal protective equipment and adhering to strict safety protocols. 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • U.S. Citizenship

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Enrollment in post-secondary degree programs related to veterinary technology, animal science, biology, or related field
